Physical Education

 

The goal of the Physical Education program is to provide a broad and balanced curriculum that leads to the development of physical, social, knowledge and understanding skills. Providing authentic and meaningful opportunities will enable learners to enjoy and prepare for lifelong participation in sport and physical activity.

All students are taught as a homeroom class, twice a week.

Through the Physical Education program from Early Childhood to Grade 5, students will learn the following: 

  • Learn basic physical skills and concepts, and successfully apply them in authentic sports and game contexts
  • Encouraged to meet challenges and take risks within a safe, supportive environment.
  • Engage with others in a caring, positive manner and experience opportunities
  • Experience leadership roles, while performing as individuals, in groups and in teams.
  • Exposed to a variety of fitness activities to promote an understanding of the components of fitness, which may lead to an individual desire to be physically active throughout life.
  • Competition is introduced and encouraged, with the emphasis on participation in an enjoyable, safe and non-threatening environment.
  • Foster enjoyment, developing self-confidence and social competencies from being active

Units are taught through Physical Education strands at various skill levels from Early Childhood to Grade 5 in a variety of outdoor and indoor environments: 

  • Invasion Games - Soccer, basketball, handball, floor hockey, ultimate frisbee etc. 
  • Challenge & Leadership - Opportunities to lead teams and classes, organise events  
  • Health-Related Fitness - Orienteering, circuit training, aerobics, yoga  
  • Net Games - Badminton, tennis, volleyball
  • Track & Field Athletics - Sprinting, Distance running, throwing, jumping 
  • Striking & Fielding Games - Target throwing, catching, batting, base running, games
  • Gymnastics - Balancing, rolling, jumping, climbing, inversion, landing etc.
  • Creative Movement - Dance steps and choreography, martial arts / self defence
  • Outdoor Activities - Ice skating, cross country skiing, sledding, climbing wall etc.

Analysis and reflection is an integral part of the Physical Education program, by using iPads, self and peer evaluation to show learning. Students are encouraged to analyze their learning process, commenting on what they do well and how they can improve. 

Student progress is shared with families four times a year aligned to the Physical Education standards.
