From ZIS to the Big Screen: Alumnus Returns to Inspire ZIS Students

This week, we’re proud to welcome back Freddy Macdonald, Class of 2019, for a special Upper School assembly—on the same day his debut feature film, Sew Torn, premieres in Swiss cinemas. What began as a Grade 12 project has evolved into a critically acclaimed production, with international screenings at SXSW and the Locarno Film Festival.

“I’m incredibly excited to return to ZIS. It feels like a true full-circle moment, given how much the school nurtured my filmmaking journey. To be welcomed back on the day of my film’s theatrical release is an absolute honor.”

Freddy’s path from student storyteller to award-winning filmmaker reflects the kind of purpose-driven learning we strive to nurture at ZIS. We’re proud to celebrate the accomplishments of our alumni community and look forward to Thursday’s assembly.
