IB English B SL/HL

Grades: 11–12 (two-year course)
Subject Area/Course Credit: English, 1 credit each year
Prerequisite: Students enrolling in English B SL must have a C-or above in EAL 10, or for HL students must have a B- or above in EAL 10, or a teacher recommendation; and have the approval of administration and their counsellor.

English B is a language acquisition course designed for students with some experience in English, but who have not yet reached native fluency. The goal of the course is for students to attain the speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills needed to communicate effectively in an environment where English is the dominant language. Students will deepen their knowledge of vocabulary and grammar, while also gaining understanding of the cultural nuances involved in the language. The course is designed around five themes: Identifies, Experiences, Human Ingenuity, Social Organization, and Sharing the Planet. All English B students complete an internally administered oral assessment, as well as two exam papers, with the HL assessment being more complex than that at SL.
