Grades 1–5
All students regularly attend a specialized visual art class. Art is also included in the home room curriculum, as well as the Design Lab being available for students to follow their own inquiries, passions and projects.
In classes, students become more aware of their own interests and preferences in Art by responding to artists and art works by creating their own designs and art works. Students explore and experiment with a variety of tools and materials. They become aware that artwork requires thought, planning, effort and revision. Students become familiar with reflection and how to appreciate their own and others’ artworks.
The art program offers students:
- a means of communication through Art and STEM experiences
- opportunities for becoming skilful
- a means of expression of both emotional and intellectual perspectives
- exposure to other cultures, places and times
- a means of linking with other disciplines
- a vehicle for wondering, discovering, reflecting and consolidating
Creativity is at the heart of the arts. It allows for innovation, interpretation, research, analysis and transfer. Learning through the arts has a positive influence on selfesteem and creative development, which carries over to all aspects of learning. Valuing imagination and celebrating original thinking promotes initiative and a lifelong love of learning.
All students are viewed as Artists and experience and explore the impact and influence artists have in society. Students explore, discover, experience, develop and express their ideas using the visual arts. Exposure to different media and opportunity for individual expression welcomes diverse interpretations and varied outcomes.
Students consider the practical and theoretical aspects of Art and Design and understand the importance of taking care of tools and materials in the Art spaces.
Students study and appreciate artworks from a range of cultures and media (including their own work) to develop their understanding of the principles of art and design in the world around them.
Reflection is an integral part of the art program. Students are encouraged to look back over the whole process, commenting on the steps as a means of evaluation, assessment and personal realization.
Students progress is reported to families four times a year based on the standards for Art.
