Foundations of Communication

This course focuses on developing essential communication and social skills to support students with their roles in their family, friendships, and community. With an emphasis on practical application, students will strengthen their ability to engage in meaningful interactions, express their needs effectively, and navigate social situations with confidence. Instruction will focus on verbal as well as nonverbal communication, active listening skills, self-advocacy, and problem-solving in a variety of real-world scenarios. Students will explore different communication methods, including spoken language, written communication, and assistive technologies. Additionally, self-regulation strategies will be integrated to help students manage emotions, build resilience, develop a strong sense of self, and adapt to various social and community settings. Through role-playing, real-world practice, and structured activities, students will develop the skills necessary for effective communication, positive relationships, and greater independence in their daily lives.
